At Futura Floors, smoked oak is more than just a surface finish – it is a refinement process that begins deep inside the wood. Also known as fumed oak, this distinctive color develops through a natural reaction between the tannins in the oak and carefully controlled ammonia vapors.
For this process, we use only premium European oak with a high tannin content. The boards are placed in sealed smoking chambers where the ammonia vapors penetrate the wood and permanently darken it. The color runs through the entire wear layer and remains even after sanding. Depending on the duration of smoking, the tones range from warm golden browns to deep chocolate hues.
After smoking, the boards are thoroughly ventilated and either brushed or left smooth, depending on the desired appearance. Finally, they are treated with UV-cured oil for a natural matte look or UV lacquer for increased durability. This creates a rich color depth and highlights the wood’s natural grain in a way that traditional stains cannot achieve.
Smoked oak complements both modern, minimalist interiors and classic designs, bringing a timeless, luxurious character to any space – with a beauty that comes from within the wood itself.
